Why it's white

Sold unfinished, on purpose.

Most daruma arrive already decided — red for luck, gold for money, painted by someone who has never met you.

The White Daruma stops short. The paper, the clay, the weight in your hand — all done. The color, the wish, and the eyes are left for you to finish. No two end up the same.

The ritual

Three moments, spread over time.

Paint your color

One flat coat is enough — no technique required. Choose from the guide, or mix a color that's yours alone.

A fine brush filling in the first eye with ink

One eye, one wish

Fill in a single eye with ink and make your wish. Say it out loud, or keep it quiet — the daruma keeps it either way.

The other, when it comes true

The second eye waits — a day, a year, however long it takes. You complete the face with your own hand.

The colors

Paint it any color.

Daruma colors were never standardized — so we don't sell luck by the shade. Below are seven examples of what people paint theirs for. Mix your own, change your mind halfway, or leave it white.

The gift

A gift you don't finish.

Most gifts arrive complete. This one waits — for their color, their wish, their hand on the brush. You give the beginning. They keep the rest.

The craft

Paper, clay, and two centuries of practice.

Each body is formed by hand from washi paper and clay in Takasaki, Japan — the town that has made daruma for over 200 years, about 900,000 of them a year. The face is brushed on by hand, so every one differs a little. Yours leaves the workshop in white.

Questions

Before you paint.

Do I need to be good at painting?

No. One flat coat of a single color is the whole job, and the eyes are two dots of ink. The daruma's shape does the rest.

What paint should I use?

Ordinary water-based acrylic works well on the papered surface. Paint isn't included; a fine brush for the eyes is.

Can I leave it white?

Yes. White is a color too — some keep it bare and let the eyes carry the whole story.

Is it a gift?

It's made for that. The box arrives unpainted, so the person you give it to chooses the color and the wish — the gift is theirs to finish.

Where does it ship from?

Directly from Japan, with free shipping worldwide. Delivery takes 7–12 days, and returns are accepted for 30 days.
